Expect some regular 'Community Chat' posts from me, as I aim to delve into the minds of the fantastic handlers who play here (either bravery or stupidity on my part, this). Also, feel free to post some yourself if there are any topics you're curious to discuss with the handlers here.
This particular topic asks the question: Does ending a match via submission bury the loser? Or is it perfectly acceptable?
I'd love to hear reasons why people think that submission defeats DO bury the loser. I'd also love to hear reasons why people think that submission defeats do NOT bury the loser.
What's the big deal? Is it utterly humiliating? Does it make someone look weak? Should it only be used in squash fights?
What are your thoughts and/or feelings on this subject?
I've always loved a good submission finish. When done correctly it's one of the most dramatic ways to end a good match. But it is typically reserved for feuds.
I find this topic very interesting because I like to deploy the submission finish for that dramatic touch but I agree it can be detrimental to the overall appearance of a loss on a character. But I do not view it as a burial method.
I suppose it could be the nail in the coffin in an actual squash match but what if it was close the entire time? What if it was just a very good match that ended in a submission?
Absolutely not! Submitting after a hard match is acceptable and gives birth to a lot of story. I, for one, am totally fine with my character tapping out because if we're operating on the 'these fights are REAL' mindset, not tapping out and risking injury makes your character look like an idiot.
Burial = squash
Like a totally lopsided match that favours the other opponent and then my dude tapping out? Yeahhhhhhhh see that I would have beef with. If I no showed and deserve a squash, sure. Go for it. Humiliate the holy hell out of my dude (or chick) and I earned that. If it's angled, or I actually showed up and put up something competitive though? I'd be fine with a loss via submission more than a loss by heel shenanigan screwjob (as a 'face' this happened probably 10 times in a row in SVW which was really, really annoying). That's more humiliating/annoying/irksome to me.
So no. Submissions are not burial and making a character that "never ever taps out" is idiotic in this game.
I like to think of the old mindset of people should have a normal finisher alongside of a submission finisher. A submission finish should really be saved for one of two things.
1. A feud where you're trying to kill eachother.
2. I'm an intense match where the normal finisher doesn't do the job.
I personally also think it depends on the character. A John Cena character would tap out. He's a human being. He feels pain. But on the other hand an Undertaker type character should never tap due to being supernatural.
I guess a few factors would go into the answer for this question. It's also personal preference because some view tapping out as a weakness. But I garuntee if I slapped on a Figure 4 Leglock and applied actual pressure or a Boston Crab, any normal human being would tap quickly.
I am a hugh UFC fan.. you will see some tap too fast and then you see some fight.
The positive, you give someone something to brag about. Yes, he or she is tough.. if that was anybody else, it would be over.. however.. there is a negative.. you can break someones bones, injury or end their career.
The odd part about how submissions have gotten some awkward reputation within e-Fedding is that you must consider how wrestling once was.
Bret Hart had the sharpshooter. Flair had the figure four. Sting even used his scorpion death lock to win a majority of his matches before he adopted the reverse DDT. Chris Jericho beat everyone in WCW with the lion tamer. Ultimo Dragon won a lot of his matches with the dragon sleeper.
You get the point. These days it is rare to see an actual submission finisher deployed often – regularly to win matches – and I think that’s because you see more high impact moves in today’s product that lead to trading finishers to build the momentum of a “better finish”. But I was always a fan of just a good wrestling match with just one or two actual finishers used.
Quick caveat, too: WWE asks their talent to minimize the use of submission finishers. This is fact, because CM Punk enjoyed the anaconda vise over anything else, but they kept insisting he needed something showy. That’s why he started using the GTS. It’s the same reason Daniel Bryan used the running knee the majority of the time over the yes lock. Sports entertainment prefers flashy moves with impact rather than something as subtle as a submission. It’s a psychological approach they’ve taken with their fans.
The only WWE performers that get away with using a submission primarily would be Charlotte and Natalya for obvious reasons.
I have no problem submitting (despite the character being perhaps more prone to passing out than actually tapping). I don't see it as a detriment. Personally, I don't read much into matches, unless I get buried for no reason.
Submissions are as legitimate as any other means of winning, in my book.
I don't mind tapping out. Submission moves try to bend and break limbs so if you don't tap you run the risk of getting injured. Isn't there a saying; live to fight another day? I think submitting is fine, especially in my character. But there are some who dislike it all together due to whatever stigma is attached to tapping out
In this specific format, I think that submission finishes should be just as common or as frequent as any other type of finish. I mean, if not, there are some people here who really wasted some attribute points when creating their characters. Want a character who never taps? Put 100 points in submission defense and then creatively re-enforce that concept through your roleplays.
