FRESH TV Studios. Set of 'The Jarvis Show'. Evening of Saturday June 25th.
'The Jarvis Show' returns from its commercial break to a chorus of clapping. The host, Pete Jarvis, leans onto the surface of his desk and waits for the audience noise to die down.
"Welcome back to The Jarvis Show! Now my next guest is from the brand new FRESH TV project, Engage Wrestling; a professional wrestling show due to start this weekend on FRESH Sports 1-"
He turns to face a side camera and mutters.
"...I believe they call that cross promotion."
He winks and turns back to the main camera.
"So without further ado, would you all please welcome the mysterious man who insisted we call him...Voidstar!"
The audience applauds again. Jarvis stands and claps along with them. The camera pans and Voidstar appears from behind a curtain. He's dressed in a fine suit, but still sporting his trademark mask and makeup. As Voidstar closes in, the host extends a hand, but Void doesn't even look and simply sits instead. Jarvis looks to the main camera and awkwardly grins, his face clearly showing that he was hoping nobody had noticed that snub. Jarvis sits and the applause dies down again.
"Now, Void...may I call you Void?"
Voidstar stares at Jarvis, but says nothing.
"Well, I'm gonna. First of all, Void, welcome to the show!"
Void blinks a few times, but still nothing. A few in the audience giggle. Jarvis adjusts his tie and licks across his bottom lip.
"So glad to have you here. Now, Void, you are signed to this exciting new project, Engage Wrestling. I'm a fan of wrestling myself, so you can be sure that I'll be tuning in. What I want to know is how it came to be; how did you get signed with the company?"
"They sent a contract. I wrote my name on it. Then they wrote their name on it, and I was signed."
Jarvis sighs and leans back into his chair.
"So what most excites you about signing for Engage?"
"I get to hurt people. In their faces. With my hands. I like doing that."
Jarvis nods along with him, his eyes slowly filling with despair.
"Awesome. I'm sure that the fans at home can't wait to see you doing just that. You've got quite the track record back in the UK. How has the switch to the USA changed things for you, both personally and professionally?"
Void pauses and thinks.
"Personally? The cars go the wrong way. Professionally, though? No difference. American blood is just as red as British blood, and stupid people are still stupid in either country."
Jarvis is visibly shocked that Void has finally said more than a couple of words. He almost smiles, and sits forward again.
"I was looking into the upcoming show. Your match looks particularly violent; a hardcore rule vs a fella by the name of Dick Devereaux. A match like this with an opponent like that is almost sure to end up bloody. It's fair to say that some fans crave blood, whilst others think it's abhorrent. What's your stance?"
"I like it."
And with that, Jarvis' smile falls from his face again.
"Not a man of many words, are you?"
Jarvis' question is bold and unscripted. Behind the cameras the crew frantically motion to Jarvis to stop whilst he's relatively ahead.
"No. Fools talk, warriors fight."
Jarvis runs a hair over his face, and smiles the fakest smile on all of TV.
"I talk for a living, does that you mean you think I'm an fool?"
The crew are going nuts now. Void nonchalantly looks on as the producer and director argue behind the camera.
"Yes. You're small and weak. Your mouth would be your only noteworthy attribute, but your voice is annoying."
The crowd both chuckle and gasp as one.
"An-annoy..."
Jarvis gasps. He looks like he's either about to flip the table over and kick Void's ass, or a have an asthma attack. Probably the latter.
"Annoying? This voice has won awards, I'll have you know!
Void shrugs.
"Is that how you validate yourself; via trinkets?"
"No, but-"
"Do you think that your shiny little trophies mean something to me?"
"No, hang on, I-"
Void laughs. Jarvis' face is a deep red.
"Now wait just a damn minute. I invited you onto my show and this is how you act? You come here with your...silly mask and your face paint? I mean look at you, what are you, a-"
Voidstar stands and looms over the host. The crowd let out a gasp, and then an 'oooooo'. Jarvis stops talking and nervously smiles instead.
"What I mean to say was thank you for coming on. Voidstar, everyone!"
The crowd sort of half clap, before the crew urge them to applaud properly. Void sits back down and gives them a single wave.
"Thanks for having me. This was fun! We should do it again sometime."
"Mhm, sure. That'll happen, ever. Time for a break folks, we'll be back soon."
The show cuts to commercial.
END.
