EXT. CA-134 E (TOWARDS PASADENA) - TUESDAY, JUNE 28, 2016 - LUNCH TIME.
Cars, trucks and other vehicles speed up and down the road as the sun beats down on the tarmac, causing sizzling waves of heat to bounce off the surface.
A 2014 FORD F-SERIES – black exterior – speeds along, windows downed ever so slightly in the driver’s cabin.
INT. FORD F-SERIES - CONTINUOUS.
Sitting behind the wheel is TOMMY QUINN, white t-shirt, cargo shorts, RayBan shades, the sun giving a delicate shine to his bald head. Sitting shotgun is LARA CHAMBERS, tight black top, figure hugging skinny jeans, black leather boots, her eyes covered by thick sunglasses.
The British babe indulges in a lingering gaze out the window with an expression that suggests the weight of the world is on her shoulders.
Chambers continues staring out the window even when she responds.
He glances at her briefly.
Chambers removes her shades; her expression one of shock.
Quinn shrugs.
Chambers glares at Quinn. He throws her a glance, spots her stare and turns back to focus on the road.
Inside, she’s dying a little – but her facial expression hides it; a sweet smile being forced out.
Quinn looks somber at the thought. He shakes his head.
The colour rapidly drains from the fighter’s face. She looks ill.
Quinn looks perplexed.
She holds her hand up to her mouth.
Tommy studies the pale babe and looks stressed. He looks over the lanes to make sure it’s safe and pulls over to the lay-by, slowing to a halt.
EXT. CA-134 E LAY-BY - CONTINUOUS
Lara storms out of the car. It was not the swordfish. It was not the car ride. It was the guilt eating her alive. Split seconds later in a rather un-ladylike manner, she throws her guts up.
INT. FORD F-SERIES - CONTINUOUS.
Quinn stares at Chambers from the cabin, watching her bring up the contents of her stomach into the road. He winces.
EXT. CA-134 E LAY-BY - CONTINUOUS.
Lara is doubled over, spitting vomit from her mouth, as the driver’s door opens and Tommy Quinn exits the pick-up truck. He walks over to her and rubs her back.
She heaves for breath and nods, staring at the ground.
Quinn chuckles a little.
He sounds unconvinced.
He studies the road and his own truck, before returning to rubbing her back supportively.
He looks a little disappointed, which Lara spots straight away.
He pats her on the back.
She smiles.
He forces a half-assed smile, before heading back towards the truck. Chambers follows behind.
Lara stares at him.
He grins and gets back behind the wheel, with Lara following suit, leaning back into the seat. On the inside she was dancing. This was only a small win though.
Until the next time.

TOMMY
All I’m saying is we don’t lose anything
by looking, do we? He’d do the same for
either of us if the shoe was on the other
foot, wouldn’t he?

LARA
Do you think I haven’t looked? After all
we have been through… do you think I haven’t
done whatever I possibly could? I thought
you know me better than that, Tommy.
TOMMY
(Calmly)
I don’t doubt for a single second that
you’ve looked, sweetheart - but he ain’t
here, is he? So let’s go look again.
We’ll spend a couple days back in Chattanooga,
just do a little reconnaissance mission
to scout the places he used to go. We’ll
be back in Cali before the weekend.
LARA
(Turning to Tommy)
You do realize the only reason I’m doing
this is because he matters to me, right?
I’m missing my training. I’m missing all
the things I’m supposed to do. I’m in a
title tournament. For the first time in
months my career is picking up. Did it ever
occur to you that he left on purpose? That
he was just fed up with being around me and
all the trouble I bring?
TOMMY
(Shaking his head, defiantly)
No way, toots.

TOMMY (Cont’d)
After the shit he told me about his feelings
for you, there’s no way he’d have just bailed;
and even if he was going to dip out on you,
he’d have let me know.
LARA
(Looking sick)
What are you talking about? What fucking
feelings? I was just a job for him.
TOMMY
(Smirks, shaking his head)
The guy was bat-shit crazy for you.
He caught feelings and he caught ‘em bad,
sweetheart. Wasn’t it obvious?

LARA
He didn’t exactly seem like the shy type.
I slept on his couch half naked. I slept
in his bed next to him. He never even tried
to kiss me. So if that was the case, he was
rather good at not showing it.

even more important for us to find him.

What?! I’m not allowed to want some
good news? After all the shit that went
down over the past couple months?

Inside, she’s dying a little – but her facial expression hides it; a sweet smile being forced out.
LARA
Look, I don’t want you to misunderstand me,
Tommy. I want him back as much as you do.
I’m just scared that he left on purpose,
you know? Until I know for sure, I can at
least pretend.
TOMMY
He didn’t leave on purpose. Something ain’t
right about the whole thing and when we find
him, he can tell you himself just what you
meant to him.
LARA
So many dark creatures were floating
around Deathcore. It wouldn’t surprise
me if anyone had something to do with it.

TOMMY
There’s been enough death in my life
to last me until it’s my turn. I don’t
even wanna think about that. Nah, there’s
no way. He’ll be laying low over Fusco’s
murder. I mean, c’mon. Security guard with
a grudge? He’ll be a prime suspect.

Stop the car please.

What?
LARA
I don’t know what it is, but I feel extremely
sick. Maybe the swordfish… stop the car, Tommy.

He sounds unconvinced.
LARA
That was a joke. But I know I ain't knocked
up… and I also know that I won’t be able
to spend thirty hours in the car to Tennessee.
Whatever it is, I feel like it's crawling
out of me.
TOMMY
Alright, well…

Or we drive a little further and check
into a motel. One of those little places?
Then try to go again tomorrow?
TOMMY
Hmmm… You know, it might be too tight,
time wise. It’s cool, we’ll try this again
next week or something.

Let’s get you home. I’ll stay with you for

LARA
Really? You don’t mind? I mean I’ve been
under a lot of pressure as of late. I could
use someone to look after me for a little while.
