The scene opens on an empty weight room, usually a haven for violent screams and the clanging of metal together now finds itself silent. In the back there’s a door wide open; lights are off but a flickering glow can be seen.
Suddenly the door opens and Van Quinn steps through the door with his gym bag slung over his shoulder, looking around he takes a deep breath, “I love the smell of a weight room in the morning.”
A moment goes by and Van notices the same flickering glow, “Coach?! You in here?!”
“In the back!”, the bass in Coach Smith’s voice carries through the empty weight room.
“That’s what she said”, Van looks into the camera and winks before dropping his gym bag and heading towards the back.
“Come in, sit.” Coach points to the couch as Van plops down and looks at the screen, “This is your opponent – Seth Daniels”
On the screen is Seth, an accomplished professional wrestler deliver devastating blows to an unfortunate opponent.
“Today we’re going to sit and visualize. The weight room can come later. I need you to close your eyes and visualize. The way we used to visualize what the offense was going to do” Coach pauses the video and kicks his feet up on his desk, “Close your eyes and visualize your opponent in front of you. He swings his left hand towards your head.”
Van smiles, “I duck. I see he’s left his ribcage open and I blast him with a right hand. His head drops in reaction and I wrap my hands around the back of his neck and pull him into a left knee. His eyes water from the impact on his nose and his vision is blurry.”
Coach Smith smiles, “You have a second to react and take advantage as he backs off in retreat”
“I charge him.” Van wastes no time responding nearly cutting off Coach Smith, “I pick him up off his feet and drive him into the corner. Shoulder thrusts to his ribs”
“GOOD! Now open your eyes” Coach makes eye contact with Van as he opens his eyes, “You remember how important the home opener was in college? You lay your claim and establish your dominance and it sets a precedent for the rest of your season. That’s what you need to do Van. You need to establish your fucking dominance. This guy is going to take you lightly, you’re the fresh meat now. This is a new environment.”
Van nods as a calmed intensity draws over his face.
“You can want to win, but you’ll never will it into existence. You need to want to prepare to win at all costs.” Coach Smith stands up from his desk, “I’ll see you outside. I bought a wrestling ring. We’ve got work to do.”
As Coach Smith walks out Van stands up and looks at the still image on the screen of Seth Daniels about to deliver another shot
“I heard what you said Seth” looking at the still shot Van seems to almost speak to the image as if it’s Seth himself, “You think I’m a jersey shore knockoff who wants to bang high school girls, bro? You want to write me off like some fuck bag party boy? Facts are facts Seth and the fact is that I know when to flip the switch – I always have and I always will. I know how to have fun, so fucking what dude. You think your witty little jokes make you superior to me?”
Shaking his head Van turns around towards the camera, “This week you’re going to learn what it’s like to be abused. You’re going to find out that experience is nice, but nothing can prepare you when you’re in a physical confrontation with me. Do I lack wrestling experience?” Van scoffs and throws his hands in the air, “You got me, bro. I’m a novice who likes to show the world what I can do. But what I can do is beat the shit out of cocky pretty boys like you. Shit Seth, I’ve sacked quarterbacks pretty like you and ruined their damn day. When we get in that ring you’re expecting a wrestling match, and you can bring that attitude all day dude. Because when I get in that ring I’m there to fight. I may not know how to armbar, but I know how to take this forearm and plant it into your temple. Leaving you delirious looking up at those bright lights you think I’m not prepared for. So bring your headlocks and arm drags. I’m bringing two fists, and the heart of a champion"
