Five Weeks Ago
As I looked around the office, almost everyone was on edge. People were leaning into other people’s cubicles, quietly whispering and glancing around at their peers. I just watched from afar as I filled up the coffee cups for a fourth time that morning. I wasn’t there two minutes before ‘Pervert Pete’ came slithering over towards me.
“How is the beautiful Rebecca today?”
“I’m good, thanks.”
I really didn’t want to entertain him; that didn’t stop him ‘accidently’ grazing my boobs with his arm as he reached for a paper cup. He didn’t even acknowledge it!
“Don’t you worry your little head about what’s going on in here, no one is going to get rid of a fine looking young thing like you.”
I ‘accidentally’ spilled my coffee.
“I’m so sorry.”
I tried to mean it, I really did. He frantically wiped the sleeve of his shirt, trying to stop the scolding coffee from touching his skin.
“That’s ok. I guess I’ll just have to take my shirt off.”
As the sleazy grin crossed his face, I turned away. I walked back to my boss’ office with his coffee in my hand, trying to avoid the eyes staring at me from across the room. They were sure I knew something, and they weren’t wrong.
“Here's your coffee, Mr Stevens.”
“Thank you. So what are they saying out there? I imagine the rumors are flying.”
I smiled at him endearingly. He was a friend of the family and had given me a job right out of school. He was like a grandfather to me and I had a lot of respect for him.
“People are talking, but no one really knows what is going to happen.”
He nodded at me slowly.
“I can’t tell them just yet, it’ll only create a panic. As soon as I know the numbers, then I’ll let them know. I don’t want them worrying about losing their jobs if they don’t have to. Don’t you stress about it though, Rebecca. So long as I’m in this chair, you’ll always have a job here.”
“Thanks a lot. I appreciate that.”
“You can go get back to your work now, I won’t be sending you for anymore coffee today, promise.”
He chuckled, trying to stay optimistic.
“Oh, and Rebecca?”
“Yeah?”
“As soon as I get the opportunity, Pete won’t be a problem anymore.”
I smiled and walked back to my desk, sure that things were going to be okay.
